Synology DS411 Slim: 3 Months later

Just a quick note to tell you about a fantastic little device, a NAS I recently bought this little guy :
Synology DS411 Slim, and now that’s its set up and running. Im totally amazed by it !
It is one of this thing everyone wants in his house !

I mean this device is my Time Machine, my Music server, my movies server, my SFR evolution box and the PS3 recognizes it without problems, I also managed to stream 3 HD movies at once on 3 different devices !
It’s fast enough for me at least.

The hardware seems solid, really light without the HDDs, ship with screws for future HDD! Well documented.
The software is beautifuly done…

Pros:
- Small Form Factor
- Expendable
- Low Power Comsuption
- Time Machine capable
- Software customizable
- Very few noise
- Apache webserver and PhP ! (awesome for testing before deployment)
- eSata, USBx2, Gigabit ethernet

Cons:
- The cost considering it’s not sold with Hard Drives.
Currently loaded mine with : 1Tb Western Digital and 2x1Tb Samsung

- Memory Not Upgradable (I have tons of RAM around here and always trying to find room for it)

Conclusion
Synology could become a big player in the tech industry if they keep on delivering quality products like that.
The DSM interface written in AJAX is simply breathtaking, it’s smooth, look like a desktop and very intuitive !
People who want to have a glimpse at what it their interface can check it out here for free with the following credentials:
login: admin
password: synology

Other:
The iOS app are basic they should improve this aspect that could become a killer feature, other alternative iOS apps are available but at an extra cost.
I wish the OS upgrades were more frequent and features added like an App Store in there would be bitchin’ !
Synology if your read this congratulation on this product !

Definitely a device that can satisfy personal heavy use and small companies, without the need for an IT guy maintaining the whole system.

Update: beta DSM has VPN support !

Copy iTunes protected files to PS3 !

Today, I’ve made a discovery that I thought would change the world…
It did not, but this will make things easier for people !

So I have decided to share it with the world, because I think it is fair use.

In this article we are going to see how to copy (legally bought) iTunes protected content to a PS3.

Yes, Audio and Video !

Requirements:

  1. OS X
  2. MediaLink (Trial Version will do),
  3. a PS3
  4. USB Key

Alright first of all you need to install MediaLink on your Mac, once it is done go to Preferences System/MediaLink (at the bottom) make sure it is turn on, then turn on your PS3 go to the Music section, and you should see a Multimedia Server called Nullriver aka  your Mac, more precisely your iTunes library.

Copying files works like this :

- if you want to copy music, go to the music section in the PS3,
- if you want to copy video, go to the video section of the PS3,

Now with the PS3 browse to your purchased items, and copy the content you want to your PS3, for songs it’s fast, for videos it takes a while as it will be transcoded on the fly by your Mac. But it will work !

Plug-in a USB key, and copy to wherever you need to.

See now you can easily copy iTunes protected content to any device you want !

Now that’s what I would call fair use !
